Before I moved to D.C. I asked my old friend Lucinda if I could write to her. 

“It could be any old thing,” I said. “Anything that interests me.” 

“Yup,” she said. 

“I warn you,” I said. “It could be about pizzas or humidity, or statues or shoes.” 

“I know,” she said. 

Lucinda and I have written each other approximately one million letters each over the course of coming-up-for 40 years. 

A while ago we co-wrote the novel Love You Madly, using our letters from the mid-90s as inspiration. 

So, this is not the first time that what started as an idea for a private conversation has turned into a publishing project. It makes sense to me though. I like the way I write when I write to Lu. I hope you do too. 

Every Tuesday morning at 10.30 am my time I’ll post a new letter. It should reach you the same day. Please write back, if you feel like it.
